Jiuzhaigou is a beautiful area located between Xi’an and Chengdu with cristal clear blue lakes and vallies as you would imagine they exist only in wonderworld. It seemed to be the perfect place for us to stay for a few days between the two cities. Turned out it’s still winter there! According to the weather forecasat it was snowing and cold, so we decided to skip it and headed directly to Chengdu.

Chengdu welcomed us with dumplings and a smoky hotel room. The non-smoker wave has definitely not yet arrived in China. Nevertheless, we managed to find a nice place to stay. Chengdu seemed to be just another big Chinese city with it’s population of more that 14 Millions. Still there are a few things that are special about Chengdu.

First, you can buy pineapple from street dealers at every corner. We didn’t see one pineapple tree, though.

Second, it is very common to sit in the street, drink tea and get your ears cleaned! They call it ear massage. We weren’t brave enough…

Are you ready for the pandas now? I didn’t expect to see these super cute animals on our trip and there they were! The Chengdu research base of Giant Panda Breeding is located just a few miles outside the city and accomodates about 100 pandas. We spent a few hours there, observing the baby pandas fooling around and eating their bamboo.

Last but by no means least: The Giant Buddha, who sits in Leshan, a few hours bus ride south from Chengdu. Apparently the biggest in the world, he’s carved into a mountain wall. Pretty impressive.
