A Weekend in Taipei

A Weekend in Taipei

The cherry blossom season just started in Japan, and since Cherry Blossom Viewing in Japan is a point on our bucket list, it is about time we headed to Tokyo. But instead of flying directly to Tokyo, we decided to stop over in Taipei. It costs about the same as flying directly, so nothing speaks against visiting Taiwan. As we were looking for a couch surfer to host us, we found out about a long time family friend of Scharnowski’s who was in town for a few days. He invited us to stay with him and his family and it turned out to be a very pleasant stay with a little foretaste of China.

We’ve been to a few different night markets on our trip, but the one in Taipei topped the list: A lot of excellent food stalls (ok, the stinky tofu was horrible), nicely presented clothes boutiques and everything one doesn’t really need. We had our typical Taipei breakfast two times in a row in the same street stall. It contained dumplings, egg omelette, stuffed rice rolls and baked goods – that reminded me of churro without the sugar – which we dipped in soy milk. It was simply delicious. We explored the city with two rental bikes on the cycle path. A trip to the nearby Yangmingshan National Park led us by sulfur springs and over a mountain to the nearby seaside promenade. It was a public holiday so everyone was there enjoying their free time, having ice cream and watching the sunset. And, as it turned out, the Taipei 101 is no. 9 of the world’s tallest buildings (449,2 m), which left no other option but to go to the top.

Taipei 101.

Thank you Vivien, Wolfgang and Ben for your warm hospitality and pleasant company!
