Good Morning Vietnam! Ho Chi Minh

Good Morning Vietnam! Ho Chi Minh

Ho Chi Minh City, formerly and probably better known as Saigon, is the second-largest and most southern city of Vietnam. Usually either the first, or as in our case, the last stop on a typical backpackers route through the country, it offers heaps of things to do and buy, as well as cheap flights to just about any city in Asia. We compensated another ridiculously-early-morning-arrival of our bus (3.50AM) with 1.5 nights in a pretty fancy hotel.

Looking back on our trip through Vietnam, we realised just how much we liked this place. While large part of the quality time we experienced was surely due to the awesome tips and contacts received at the Flipside Hostel in Hanoi, we could not help but feel that Vietnam was one of the most interesting countries so far. Mind-blowing nature, lots of fun things to do, really tasty food, great public transportation, truly fair prices and exceptionally friendly people: Vietnam offers just about all the necessary factors for a truly unforgettable destination.

So, rather than writing about Saigon, where we only spent one day, this here is for Vietnam in general:

Do: Activities. Sounds touristy, and it is, but they’re really well organised, interesting and really comparatively cheap.

See: The different types of nature. Make sure to get away from the touristy coast line and up into the highlands for a drastic change in scenery.

Don’t: Be afraid of the traffic. While it seems almost suicidal at first, you get used to it pretty quick. Go with the flow, and you’ll be fine.

Random fact: Vietnam is up to this day the only country that ever “beat” the USA in a war.
