Happy Australia Day!

Happy Australia Day!

Our last stop in Australia was Sydney. It is the biggest city of this continent (I actually call it planet, because of its enormous size and the throughout relaxed and laid back mentality of the inhabitants… not that I would call them aliens, in the contrary: I think that humanity in general would do good to adapt a bit more of the Aussie chill mood).

One thing we have come to appreciate a lot on our trip is the great hospitality we experience: People who open their homes and hearts and let us be part of their lives for a few days without hesitation and expectation really inspire us. Throughout Australia, we’ve been able to stay with friends, which made our stay on this planet so much better. Sydney was no different: We were able to stay with Jake, whom Markus had met in the USA 17 years ago and not seen since. In spite of probably not having any actual recollection of Markus at all – Jake was 9 back then – he invited us to stay at his place and even picked us up from the airport without hesitation. Not only that, but he took time out of this busy schedule to show us around town.

By night, when Sydney turns on its nightlife mode, the streets become crowded with young and even younger people, drinking and searching for …something. We couldn’t really figure out what, though.

As it is almost mandatory to a visit of Sydney, we went to the famous Bondi Beach. Coincidentally, a friend of Markus back from school and his wife live one minute walking distance away from the beach. We spent a lovely and windy night together enjoying wine, cheese and seafood by the beach.

The 26th of January is AUSTRALIA DAY! Whatever they celebrate, they do it big and loud. Unfortunately, it rained the whole day. But hey, Aussies love the rain, so we learned, so that did not stop them in any way.

In total we spent thirty-three days in “Straya” – and enjoyed every single one of them. We can’t wait to come back to this relaxed and friendly place where everybody is your “mate”. But for now, it’s back to Asia: Philippines, here we come!
