California

When we finally managed to leave the Bay area, we attacked the rest of the state the Beach Boys like the girls from. Going up the coast until Fort Bragg and then heading inland, crossing some hills, we were highly confused by the changes in climate: We arrived at the home of our couchsurfing-hosts half frozen, and literally needed a good half hour under a hot shower to feel alive again. Even in summer, average temperature at this (otherwise rather nice place) hovers around 50-65 degrees Fahrenheit (15-25 Celsius), and we definitely caught a cold night. Leaving early the next morning, we did expect a slight increase in temperature upon leaving the coast – but not that: We were greeted by a staggering 107 degrees Fahrenheit (42 Celsius) in Redding. Ha – double the temperature!

And then, close to melting on our bikes cruising on Highway no. 3 (which by the way is a dream of every biker), we see this.

Yes, California is weird.

We took a week to get back down to LA, where we would meet our friend. The week was dominated by amazing nature and more crazy temperature rides. The former blew our mind: From the windy roads leading to Redding, passing Lake Tahoe, going through Yosemite and then Sequoia National Park, we felt in awe by what we saw. The latter did not cease to surprise us: From the chilli winds in Yosemite to the burning furnace that calls itself Fresno: We’ve never ever felt these kind of differences in temperature within a single day. And I’m pretty sure we never again will.

California – you’re weird. But we like you!
