While most of us may be used to some sort of change in time zone due to travel, this one still managed to throw us off a bit: Crossing the date line in the Pacific Ocean is…weird. The 15-hour time difference backwards between Hong Kong and Los Angeles means that you would in theory be able to land in LA before you take off in Hong Kong. On the same day. Well, we didn’t quite pull this one off, due to a stopover in Tokyo, but still: Arriving only 50 minutes after you’ve taken off is not bad, for a 15-hour flight.

With Asia now behind us, it was time to ditch the backpacks. We managed to sell one off and shipped the other one back home with some now useless stuff, and got to the exciting part: Choosing our new mode of transportation. Like kids in a toy store, we drove from motorbike dealer to motorbike dealer, each subsequent visit making the choice only harder. After doing about 600 kilometres in 3 days (yes, that is crossing Switzerland twice – all in the same city), we nailed it.

Groovey, baby!

Groovey, baby!

Is almost 3.5 litres of combined engine a slight overkill? Maybe. Is it exactly what you want for a trip across the land of “size matters”? Heck yeah!

After spending what felt like almost countless hours and phone calls on sorting out issues like insurance, taxes and accessories, we were finally ready to hit the road. Ready for the last quarter of our trip: Crossing the United States of America.

While mostly absorbed with getting ready for just that, we did manage to see some of the typical sights of LA, too. Nice neighbourhoods and great little coffee places is what stuck to us most; but more than actual things we felt thankful for all the great people we met. FromĀ providing a roof over our heads to taking us on an awesome hike to introducing us to the breakfast burrito: A huge thanks to everybody who helped makeĀ things work out for us. You know who you are.

America – here we come!
